Over the past decade, new research has identified media as having the television to influence adolescents' developing views about sex. Some studies suggest teens exposed to the most sexual content on TV are. A few studies have assessed the association between the degree and nature of adolescent exposure to sexual content via television and their sexual attitudes.
Researchers are just beginning to explore whether some of the above-noted research revealing a relationship between exposure to sexual media and progression in sexual activity generalizes to adolescents’ use of sexual social media. One study revealed that sex-related self-disclosure on social media was associated with off-line sexual risk behaviors (including casual sex). 17 . Similarly, in a qualitative study of adolescent girls aged 11 to 15, those who were at an earlier stage of physiologic development were less interested in sex portrayed in the media whereas more mature young women were intrigued and more actively sought out sexual content in the media as a means of “learning the rules, rituals, and skills” of romance and relationships. 30 . Studies of sexual messages in movies and on television (prime time, soaps, and music videos have been studied most heavily) have found that over the past twenty years, there has been an overall increase in the number of portrayals and the amount of talk about sex in.
Three studies offer some insight into sexually active teens: environment, age of partner and perceived family support may affect young people's decisions to have sex. In a nationally representative survey of those ages conducted on landline and cell phones, the Pew Research Center’s Internet American Life Project found: 4% of cell-owning teens ages say they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images of themselves to someone else via text messaging. Sex is everywhere. And studies show that the more sexual content kids watch and listen to, the earlier they’re likely to have sex themselves. In fact, teens report that their main source of information about sex, dating and sexual health comes from what they see and hear in the media.
